Online Activist Hacked and then Shot to Death in Bangladesh

Nazim Uddin Samad, 27, a student of the evening session of law department of Jagannath University and an avid online activist was hacked and then shot in the head to death in Sylhet Bangladesh.

He was attacked at Ekrampur intersection by three assailants while walking to his home in Gendaria with another youth after completing classes at the university near Bahadur Shah Park.

Samad wrote against religious extremism on his Facebook wall. In the section for religious view in his Facebook profile, he stated, “I have no religion.” He also wrote a post in protest against the recent ‘rape’ and murder of Comilla college student Sohagi Jahan Tonu.

A day before he was slaughtered, he shared a video of a Maulana’s (priest) anti-women liberation waaz ( religious lecture) and criticized the views of the Maulana.

The killers who came on a motorcycle first intercepted them and then attacked Samad with machetes. At one point, he fell on the street and then the attackers shot him to confirm death before leaving the place. His brain spilled over the road in the attack.

His friends stated on Samad’s Facebook wall that the assailants shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ just before launching the heinous assault on the young activist.

Police are yet to confirm whether Radicals were behind the murder similar to those of the writer & blogger Avijit Roy and various other online activists, publishers last year.
