Bangladeshi Film Star Nawshaba Arrested over Anti-government Social Posts

Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed is a TV and film actress and voice artiste. Ahmed was arrested was on 4 August 2018 at 10:30 PM from Uttara Dhaka Bangladesh by the local law enforcers named RAB or Rapid Action Battalion. She was accused of spreading false news over the 2018 Bangladesh road safety protests. On 5 August 2018, Rapid Action Battalion officials claimed she confessed to the allegations.

The film actress has reportedly been kept behind bars ever since over instigating violence during the recent student protests by spreading rumors on her social media accounts. Only yesterday Quazi Nawshaba has been placed on a second spell of remand (in custody again).

Nawshaba repented her anti-government actions in the court hearing and stated she was overwhelmed with emotion while posting the live video on Facebook where she describes the horrendous police brutality against juvenile school students. She also claimed that the police with the help of local political goons killed four students and gouged out the eyes of another at Jigatala intersection.

A court here on Friday put actress Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed on a two-day fresh remand in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Amirul Haider Chowdhury passed the order when Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, inspector of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit and the investigation officer of the case, produced Nawshaba before his court on expiry of her 4-day remand and sought a 10-day fresh remand.

The court also rejected the bail petition filed by her lawyer.

She was held from Uttara on August 4 for allegedly spreading rumors on social media about the student protests. Police said, she did so to create anarchy and confuse people.
