No more Porn in India
The Indian government has blocked thousands of pornographic websites in a bid to eradicate pronography from the Indian society for good .
Internet service companies were asked to prevent “open and free access” to over 1850 porn websites, the Department of Telecommunications of India issued the order yesterday.
“It’s a list of 1857 URLs. Most of the sites are pornographic. I would say 100% of the sites,” a senior ISP manager told Legally India. “All the ISPs have to implement [the block] because we are working as per the restrictions of our licensor. We will work and we have to block, that is all … You must have started seeing the effects of this blocking,” the manager added, implying that the smaller Indian ISPs would soon have to follow suit.
The Times of India reported Monday that the government had acted after the Supreme Court had taken the Home Ministry to task for not blocking websites containing illegal pornography.
While some claimed the Supreme Court would not have issued such an order because of civil liberties conflicts, the measures have been effectively enforced, as adult content lovers ended up with blank pages when trying to access websites like Pornhub or Redtube.
The websites will remain blocked until the government figures out how to restrict access to all the pornographic sites in existence on the internet today, the government spokesman stated.
This is the largest effort to ban websites by the Indian government, said an executive at a telecommunications company who asked not to be named. “Off and on you get instructions to ban sites, but this is the first time I’ve seen a list this big,” he said. “I don’t know what they’re thinking. A new site pops up every day. It’s futile.”
Internet users across the world are speculating that the recent rape cases of India with increase dramatically due to this measure taken by the government.
Some are also criticizing the Hippocratic nature of the Indian society where a porn star named Sunny Leone is an actual Bollywood film star making Indian movies viewed by a massive Indian audience.
